"By the end of Blackgrass Express, the debut album by the Fort Worth-by-way-of-Burleson husband-and-wife folk outfit Phantom Sensation, you can tell their songwriting has been affected as much by movies as it has by punk. Each song unfolds with a beginning, middle, and end, a sequence of scenes in a larger narrative about a woman coming to terms with her own quest for revenge, stuck on a train peopled by souls damned from their own vengeance."

about

Harry's first encounter on the Blackgrass Express is a drifter. He tells Harry the story of his dissent from the powers that be. He reveals that the train "ain't haunted, it's damned".

lyrics

The wicked rest easy way up at the top
The higher they are, The harder they drop
Tighten the noose, Throw stones in the bed
Til the chickens come home to nest
The man with one hand holds the key,
The all seein’ eye saying, “Everyone must sacrifice,
For the greater good,” he said, Godamn his soul
Hell is the only home he’s ever known.

The hair of the dog that bit me, The yellow eyes of a stray cat
Whiskey on a Sunday morning, The band is all in black
Singing a song that bares a warning, Hold tight to that cross
Sleight of faith could be healthy but grace is long gone

Covering up the wound with the hair of a rabid dog
I was howling at the moon ‘fore too long

So, they built their mighty city
atop the skulls and the bones of the town folk
They were thinking they could get to heaven,
They were going the wrong direction
A revelation they said, Closer to God they said
But they weren’t closer to nothing
Except from falling from the heights of their egos
Warding off the non-believers with the hair of the dog
Don’t they know, They’re playing God

They took the blue from the sky, You dried out the Earth
There’s a blood stain growing on your shirt

I’m going down with this city, I’m taking all of you with me
You scoundrels that defy God’s word
Until those gears stop turning, I’m breaking off the hands of the clock
Until you fall, fall, fall far from the top
Until you fall, fall, fall far from the top

It’s a cold day in Hell, My bones are chilled
And runnin won’t do no good
There’s a black house where the Church once stood
