"By the end of Blackgrass Express, the debut album by the Fort Worth-by-way-of-Burleson husband-and-wife folk outfit Phantom Sensation, you can tell their songwriting has been affected as much by movies as it has by punk. Each song unfolds with a beginning, middle, and end, a sequence of scenes in a larger narrative about a woman coming to terms with her own quest for revenge, stuck on a train peopled by souls damned from their own vengeance."

Firewalkin' 01:45
The band in black, we where our heartache on our sleeve A house of horrors for all the world to see When we’re feeling into deep, we can keep our souls from burning By the skin of our teeth So get that old tyme religion in yer life Go out moon dancing ‘neath the beat red colored sky When yer feeling like a sheep, just a cog in the machine Boy, ya best get to believin, Now we’re stomp, stomp, stompin out the fire Hoping daylight will come soon We’re goin out firewalkin ‘Neath a blood red moon

Devil on board! -Engineering the machine Breathe the blackest steam I’ve ever seen Covering the sky in ash and turning the lakes into tar pits Where the green grass don’t grow, the sun hasn’t shown Upon the gears of the slums below Blood is dripping on a clockwork pentagram Better run and hide, ya know This train ain’t slowing - Down, Let us go down Down with the train that took me down Way down Brass and iron, skull and bones Broken compass, no direction home Those rails are red hot, the Devil’s makin good time Better stab ‘em through the heart Ya know, that Devil won’t stay- Down, Let us go down Down with the train that took me down Way down In my desperation I dare not cry outloud I carved my name in the trunk of a tree And on that carving block, Is my life story It was a rolling stone, Now it’s a train that can’t slow down

The wicked rest easy way up at the top The higher they are, The harder they drop Tighten the noose, Throw stones in the bed Til the chickens come home to nest The man with one hand holds the key, The all seein’ eye saying, “Everyone must sacrifice, For the greater good,” he said, Godamn his soul Hell is the only home he’s ever known. The hair of the dog that bit me, The yellow eyes of a stray cat Whiskey on a Sunday morning, The band is all in black Singing a song that bares a warning, Hold tight to that cross Sleight of faith could be healthy but grace is long gone Covering up the wound with the hair of a rabid dog I was howling at the moon ‘fore too long So, they built their mighty city atop the skulls and the bones of the town folk They were thinking they could get to heaven, They were going the wrong direction A revelation they said, Closer to God they said But they weren’t closer to nothing Except from falling from the heights of their egos Warding off the non-believers with the hair of the dog Don’t they know, They’re playing God They took the blue from the sky, You dried out the Earth There’s a blood stain growing on your shirt I’m going down with this city, I’m taking all of you with me You scoundrels that defy God’s word Until those gears stop turning, I’m breaking off the hands of the clock Until you fall, fall, fall far from the top Until you fall, fall, fall far from the top It’s a cold day in Hell, My bones are chilled And runnin won’t do no good There’s a black house where the Church once stood

Madness 04:26
I've been runnin, Runnin from the madman Runnin from the madman inside myslef I've been slippin, slippin into madness Madness that runs deep in my bones I've been walkin Walkin to the cross roads To the cross roads to save my soul I met a girl there Her name was Lucy I met a girl, she slit my throat I'm so cold an alone I'm so cold and alone Madness, like a dog without a bone Madness, a long way from home I've been runnin Runnin from the madman From the madman inside myself I've been slippin Sippin into madness Madness that runs deep in my bones I'm so cold an alone I'm so cold and alone Madness, creepin' like a spider on a web Madness, You'll know madness yet!

Hollow 03:20
His eyes were hollow like a dead man He's seen better days Days of wonder and of glory But that turned into a different story When his shallow heart, it burnt up from the inside out He was hollow like a dead man That means open season For an evil so strong It'll turn your heart into a deep, dark hole Hollow! So are you listening? No, I mean, are you really hearing what I'm saying I'm sayin freedom, true freedom Is just beyond the walls of our mental prisons But that's just human nature, To want what you can't have And to fix what ain't broke Hollow! Shallow! How could we be so shallow Pourin gasoline into the flame The Devil no where around to blame You can't beat God at his own game

No Tomorrow 03:27
Livin' life like a freight train Pickin' up speed Any where but here has what I need What's a man without a home Nowhere to hide his bones He said, "Any love but yours is what I'm looking for, I'm not looking forward There's no tomorrow for me No tomorrow for me Livin' life like a freight train Ya wanna lay your head down on those tracks Hoping you'll wake up some where so far away You can't look back That iron horse won't do you no good Another day wishin' you were dead Maybe, someday, you won't need to pretend No tomorrow for me No tomorrow for me

Fire's burnin' Fire's burnin' Flames still licking my feet Smoke is risin' Smoke is risin' Devil's hot on my trail Blood is boilin' Blood is boilin' Too scared to run, Too scared to hide Can't just die here like a dog on the ground Night is fallin' Night is fallin' Sun is sinkin! There's a tombstone out there with my name on it Another nail in the coffin, Another body for the fire The sun goes down on one hundred fresh graves Earth is screamin' Earth is screamin' When God steps on your ant hill is it your fate to die What's the use in tryin' Ain't a woman alive who's seen the things I've seen Willing to stay blind Pretend its all okay when, really, it ain't at all In this world of illusion Only the truth will shne through Burning like a fire in the night!

So are you scared yet? No, you've never been a God fearin' man You're not dead just yet How could death be any worse You took the last train out of town It was the last time the sun went down It was the eve of the apocalypse The hands of the clock stopped tickin' You were a mother with a child You left a shadow on the wall Caught underneath the rubble o, the hair of the dog You're out swimmin' in the fire Dancin' in the flood Tryin' to chase off the scent of the devil you were Nowhere to go when that pendulum come 'round Watch your head the axe is comin' down! Now we’re stomp, stomp, stompin out the fire Hoping daylight will come soon We’re goin out firewalkin ‘Neath a blood red moon

Red Gallows 03:22
Was a man, died alone No one to look out for him So, tonight, he's sleeping with the tad poles He's hangin' from the gallows Red gallows, Was justice truly served Did he get what he really deserved Now there's blood in the street and no one to clean it up Red Gallows Red Gallows Was a woman, talked to God Never could see eye to eye So, tonight, she's singing in the shadows She's dancing from the gallows Red gallows, Was justice truly served Did he get what he really deserved Guess, you could say you struck a nerve Now there's blood in the street and no one to clean it up Red Gallows Red Gallows

I've always been bad at goodbye I couldn't lie to your face, Couldn't look my mama in the eye I'm going back to pick up the slack Hell, I'm never on time God, show me a sign Took the one after 665 That railway stole my pain away It's rough on your soul, but it's better than the road Let us go down with the train that caused me so much pain Beat the Devil at his own game! Something happened, The world changed And the light flooded the dark You stood up to those nightmares in your head Face the truth, you might be dead But you might be alive! The fire rose, The fire rose You stood up to those nightmares in your head Face the truth, you might be dead But you might be alive! The fire rose, The fire rose And then black smoke.

about

Set in the American South, this concept album takes place in an unknown future. Originally imagined as a stage play, the album is condensed into ten songs that follow unsuspecting passengers imprisoned upon a ghost train. With each song, we learn more of these passengers, all victimized by their own vengeful spirits.
